The Evolution of Time Tracking
Remember going to work and punching in your timecard? It never failed, every couple of weeks you would forget to punch in or out and your manager would need to question you about the strange number of hours listed on your time report. That timecard may have listed the number of hours you worked but it never listed exactly what you were doing. Timecards are not utilized as often as they used to be in the office.
For the majority of the workforce, the timecards were replaced by the timesheet. Timesheets had one advantage over the timecards - you could list the number of hours you worked on a specific project or for a specific customer. If you were lucky, you had an electronic timesheet that you could email to your payroll department. However, many people had to keep paper copies of timesheets and hand deliver or fax the information to the payroll department. Of course, someone was always late with the information or the fax machine did not print someone's timesheet. Many workers still use timesheets.
